WTF?! I would like to know which community ANET listens to..
The people who play the game or a bunch of mischievous grimlins I mean what is up w/ putting in ultimately pointless additions. I mean lets look at it this way, we finally get a storage increase, and w/ so much possibilities, like a 2nd tab of another 25 slots, or a tab for customized(armor, weapons) items, or a simple increase in gold capacity...but NO! they went w/ this:
http://guildwars.com/gameplay/storage/
I mean HOLY CRAP! a slot for each stack of material -_- I mean wow, just who's freaking Idea was that? woo! I got 250 iron in storage just for a rainy day!! nevermind that most armors require about 400 of em(15ks) while each stack is still capped at 250. I'm sure people w/ a spare stack of ecto/shards/ruby/sapphire will have some use for this, atleast free up some slots or 1. Maybe a novel goal, look for when this update to be incorporated, people in town buying a stack of each material just to say they capped the new storage
I mean wow, I am simply apalled by this So much potential for new storage space and they made one that is what would've been the buttom of alot of people's list. Don't get me wrong, its better than nothing, and an increase mod for storage is a step in the direct direction, but I wish they wouldn't taken a full step forward increase of doing **** like this. Damn..

umm.. my storage is overflowing with crafting supplies... which provide less space in my storage for other things... making me have a mule character.
I do have 250+ of every common and less of rares so for me this opens up a large amount of space for me. I may not be that the uncommon situation.
the only thing I could compalin is lack of a "event item" tab / storage.

I suspect the reason they went with this is because with predetermined items in the slots and a max of 250 of those items, they can store the data for the entirety of the new storage in exactly 34 bytes (one per item). Allowing any item, especially randomly generated drops, no doubt would take a lot more data. I've never worked on an MMO but I imagine there's some concern over how much space each account takes up.

AMEN!!!!!!
Yeah, the special fancy event items take up 5 or 6 slots, and I only wear them once or twice a month.

Yeah... I'm with Tempest. I'm one of the "material RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOs" of my guild, so my storage used to be overflowing with materials, but lately I've just been moving them onto my lesser used characters so I actually have some room to put useful things into my storage. Unfortunately, by using this method... I end up not knowing when/where I have materials, or how many I have of them... so I've wasted quite a bit of money buying materials that I already had. This is gonna make me a happy camper.
I would almost rather have a seperate "inventory" for your characters, almost like a dresser or wardrobe or something that you could store your armor in. Because, although you only really NEED like.... 1-2 pairs of armor, some people (like myself) like the aesthetics of them, and want to collect different types... which will, unfortunately, make you run out of room very quickly.

So as soon as anet doesnt something that fits your exact needs, they are doing things wrong?
I think you need to understand how save files work. increasing a players server side save file by just a small amount has huge impact when multiplied by all players. thats why they need effecient ways to store things, and this is one of the ideas they have thought up so far ( and notice they said theyd work on more) by doing it by material and amount, it decreases by alot the amount of information required to be sent.
Ive played quite a few pay per month mmo, and it took some longer to do anything about storage cause the technology wasnt there to do so.
but im quite happy with it so far, cause my storage is full of materials and dyes, all other items stay on the character that needs it.

Did I ever say it was wrong? nope, you're reading into it bud, I basically said it is ****ed up, although I realize that server side of things are the determining factor, Its just it should've been something a bit more useful as a whole. I'm sure some people are happy knowing they can have 1 stack of mats in their storage, but as a whole, Who gives a rats buttom... I mean damn, a storage for your custo'ed weapons, armors and stuff would've been infinitely more useful. They are custo'd ie out of the market, signitured to your char, I'm sure that atleast takes out some room in the server knowing that item is only assigned to a specific char. Then again, I am not one to make face that I know the technicalities of stuff cause I don't.

One stack, be it a small amount of storage, still frees up my storage mule a few slots :\

I also tend to stock pile Crafting materials and truthfully thats all I have currently in storage. I think its important to remember that just because it may not be as useful to you as you'd like, that doesnt make it completly useless and stupid.
I'm willing to bet that material storage will help alot of people me included. For me storage for customization and armor would open maybe 5-6 spaces while material storage could potentially clear my entire storage for other things.

i firmly believe that this is just a first step. if this works out (functionality-wise) for their servers, i see many new tabs coming in the future.
also, ANET is likely considering an increase to a stack size (im no genious, but i dont see how a 250 stack could be much different than a 999 stack- i know upping it to 1000 would throw things off but as long as its 3 digits it shouldnt be THAT big of a deal). its true a stack of 250 iron in storage wont cover a new armor set, but think if that stack were 999 iron?
lets all just A) be thankful we're getting SOMETHING and B) be patient and see how this plays out.

Their solution works for me. I'm rather surprised Anet increased storage, since I became somewhat appreciative of their lack of storage space. It really requires you to choose what is valuable enough to keep.
Still clears up 10 slots of my inventory. Plus, I'm more inclined to build up an inventory of silk/linen/etc which may be helpful later on.

The game was originally designed almost three years ago. Some changes take massive coding changes to accomplish. Any changes to the code base also have to be compatible with future chapters. That's possibly why the expanded storage was set for Factions only (and linked accounts).
The community closest listened to? The Alpha testers. Direct access to the devs is a huge bonus.

The community ANet listens to is the community of the majority. Unfortunately for you, you don't belong to that aparantly. Many people will be happy with this change, because many are stockpiling crafting materials.
peace.

Please point out where these "majority" hang out cause I'm plenty sure that a "majority" of people wanted storage for armors and stuff like that, infact, I never even heard ingame or online sites of people asking for materials storage, let alone a specific slot of 1 stack each. I know some people here have the "OMG I'm a defender zealot of anet if i'm good enough I get a pat in the back" kind of person, but c'mon, this update was not a reflection of the general community in GW.

Also, they have knowledge you don't. Do you (the OP and all other naysayers) know what are the most kept items in storage? I would bet money that A.Net researched the statistics on what is in everyone's storage to make sure they would please and affect the most people. I would also bet that they noticed that a large majority of players would have freed slots when they made this addition. They are a clever company that doesn't usually waste their precious resources in the manner some people suggest.

I would have liked to have seen that too, runes, dyes, weapon mods, and one for event items but oh well least I can free up 5 slots.
